How It Works
Unlock the city...
There are three ways to unlock a Smart Metro Bike.
- Use a TAP Card: If you purchased a TAP card at a kiosk, or if you have a TAP card registered for Metro Bike Share, tap your card on the bike screen to unlock.
- Use an ID & PIN: If selected at the kiosk, use the User ID and PIN texted to you.
- Use the Metro Bike Share app: Metro Bike Share passholders can release Metro Bikes with the Metro Bike Share app and our partner app, BCycle.
... and lock your bike when you're done!
When you finish your ride, simply lock the bike at any Smart Metro Bike Share station. You can also lock to any public bike rack for a convenience fee*.
* Convenience Fees:
$2 to lock a bike to a public bike rack within the Smart Metro Bike service area.
$20 to lock a bike to a public bike rack outside of the Smart Metro Bike service area.
About the Smart Metro Bike
Smart Metro Bikes are available on the Westside and North Hollywood. Access and ride bikes anywhere in the Smart Metro Bike Share service area and end your trips by locking Smart Metro Bikes at any of the Smart Metro Bike stations.
Built for comfort and convenience. Smart Metro Bikes have a front basket and rear pannier compatible rack to carry your things, wide tires to keep your ride comfy and plush, and eight speeds to roll easily at any pace.
Lock-to Capable. You can lock for free at any Smart Metro Bike station. You can also lock bikes at any available public bike rack for a convenience fee. This gives rider convenient access to destinations within the Smart Metro Bike service area.
TAP Integrated. Metro Bike Share’s integration with TAP extends to the Smart Metro Bike. Unlocking a Smart Metro Bike is as simple as tapping your card to the screen on the bike’s handlebars.
TAP cardholders must be enrolled in Metro Bike Share, so be sure to register your TAP card and enroll on taptogo.net/metrobikeshare.

What happens if I don’t release a Smart Metro Bike before the U-lock locks again?
Do Smart Metro Bikes have to be returned to a station?
Riders will be charged a $2 convenience fee when a Smart Metro Bike is locked outside of a station within the Smart Metro Bike service area. Riders are responsible for paying a $20 fee when a Smart Metro Bike is locked outside of the Smart Metro Bike service area. For more information on station locations and the Smart Metro Bike service area boundaries, please refer to the Metro Bike Share Station and Bike Map.
How do I check out a Smart Metro Bike?
After paying for a pass, you can check out a Smart Metro Bike using a TAP card registered for Metro Bike Share, the B-Cycle app, or your 6-digit checkout ID and 4 digit PIN.
